The Desert Was Blooming
APRIL 8TH AT COMEDY WORKS DOWNTOWN
Hey all,
Happy April. I just returned to Denver after my annual pilgrimage to dusty Tucson, AZ, and another fine weekend of comedy at Laff’s Comedy Cafe. I’ve been visiting this antique little joke room in the Southwest now for almost seventeen years, and I still welcome every single trip. Partially for the comedy but, almost as equally, for the landscape. The desert is so fucking comforting to me, which is bizarre given that it is nearly uninhabitable without the assistance of modern technology. Regardless, my blood pressure drops several points the minute I step foot on their scalding asphalt. Best sunsets in the game.
Truthfully, though, I didn’t expect much this trip as early April is generally fairly dull in the Sonoran.
But, thanks to an ever-accelerating environmental apocalypse that many of MMA’s best thinkers believe is not happening, I got to take a few minutes to enjoy the desert in an extremely premature bloom. (In the end it doesn’t matter what the naysayers believe, the truth is in the flowers.) Walking up Tumamoc, I witnessed the Barrel Cactus already donning their crowns of yellow, orange, red, and purple. I saw the Ocotillos displaying their flame tipped, thorny wands. I got mosquito bites while watching Gila’s drill holes into Saguaros.
Listen, I despise our petroleum dependence - I wish it a suffocating hell - but, in an odd way, I probably owe it a thank you. I arrived a jittery mess, anxiety and air travel once again drilling holes in my nervous system like those industrious woodpeckers searching for a secure place to bone and drop their offspring. But I left rockin’ a few insect welts, two shades closer to tan, and with a bit more nuclear sand in my shoes. And that was just what the doctor ordered. Better than any Xanax. Well… Xanax below a 1MG dosage.
Thanks again, Old Pueblo, I can’t wait to come back. And, well, thank you, big oil. I guess I owe you something as well for pushing spring back to when I was going to be there. But, also, fuck you. For real. Die a slow, bloated death.
Lots of shows coming up below, both music and comedy. Come out and see me.
